Notice decoy symbols on B-24 Lucky Strike’s scoreboard - these are for diversionary missions flown by the aircraft.

A Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress takes a direct hit, probably from 88mm flak, and loses its wing as it plummets to the earth.
My personal opinion is that the word “hero” is massively overused/abused, especially today; not everyone who serves is a hero.  However, the combination of facing the dangers day in and day out that the crew in the aircraft shown above faced, to accomplish what they did (take part in winning a world war), and pay the price that they paid, I think the term hero is applicable.

The Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight’s Lancaster PA474 is one of only two Lancaster aircraft remaining in airworthy condition (the other is in Canada with the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum at HamiltonOntario)

PA474 is currently painted to represent Lancaster DV385, “Thumper Mk III” of 617 (‘Dambuster’) Squadron, with the code letters ‘KC-A’.

The Yak-9 was a Russian fighter plane during World War 2 and was built to match the German Bf-109’s which it successfully achieved. The Aircraft was a direct modification of the Yak-7 with the same armament however due to the revisions the maneuverability was greater than it’s predecessor.

Grumman TBM Avenger missing 1/3 of its wing after taking fire over Chichi Jima.
In the book “Flyboys” by James Bradley, the U.S Navy bombing raids on Chichi Jima were covered extensively.  In the photo above, Lt. Bob Kings avenger was hit by anti aircraft fire.  Losing control of his aircraft, he ordered his crew to bail out, while he was attempting to bail out himself, the aircraft righted itself and control was gained back.  The crew members were never recovered and Lt. King was devastated at the loss of his crew.  Although a tragic story, this photo represents the extremely rugged and reliable design of U.S Naval aircraft of the period.
